“One through ten: I go to work. Eleven through twenty: I stay in bed,” he thought as he dropped the die. As it fell, time slowed. The gold numbering glinted in the dim light of his room. His mind wandered to that first night of Dungeons & Dragons. How simple it felt to leave his fate to the dice. How many interviews he skipped and late night cigarettes he didn’t smoke. All sacrificed on the Altar of Polyhedral. How long would he keep discarding responsibility under the D20’s reign? Would he forever live and die by the die? Then the clatter as it hit the box, rolled into the corner and up onto the die’s edge. The pause felt imminent as he reached out to reroll.
